This is a Canadian version of the Scotch favorite. They are delightful served
on a dessert tray with cheese.
2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 cups quick-cooking rolled oats
1 cup shortening or lard
1/3 cup cold water
Measure and sift into a bowl the first 5 ingredients. Mix in rolled oats.
Cut in shortening and blend in water (enough to make a workable stiff dough).
Roll out on a floured board to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into squares or cut out rounds
with cookie cutter. Bake at 375 degrees F for 15 minutes or until just brown.
This recipe makes a not-too-sweet cookie.
Makes 12 dozen.
