2 cups milk
4 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup raisins (optional )
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Ground cinnamon for top
Vanilla Sauce
1 cup sugar
3 teaspoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon butter
1 1/2 cups boiling water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 350°F. Place bread crumbs in a buttered 1 1/2-quart baking dish. In a saucepan, scald milk, then add butter, sugar, eggs, salt, raisins and vanilla extract. Blend well. Pour over the bread crumbs; sprinkle with cinnamon.
Bake at 350ºF for 30 to 35 minutes or until top is golden. Cut in squares and serve with warm Vanilla sauce.
For sauce: Mix together sugar and cornstarch well. Add butter, boiling water and vanilla extract; cook stirring constantly, till thickened but, pourable.
Yield: 4 servings

Amish Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce
4 cups bread crumbs (day-old bread)2 cups milk
