Chocolate Covered Cherry Cake with Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting

1 (18.25 ounce) box chocolate fudge cake mix
2 eggs
1/3 cup milk
1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling
1 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 cup chocolate chips

Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray bottom and sides of 9 x 13-inch pan with cooking spray.

Beat cake mix, eggs, milk and almond extract for 1 minute. Beat in pie filling and chocolate chips for 1 more minute. Bake for 35 minutes or until tests done with a wooden pick. Remove from oven and cool completely on wire rack. Frost with Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting.

Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting:
1 stick (1/2 cup) softened butter
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese-softened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
6 tablespoons milk (add gradually so frosting remains thick)
1/2 cup cocoa powder
3 3/4 cup confectioners' sugar

Beat all ingredients together until light and fluffy. Frost cake. Garnish with chocolate covered cherries if desired.
