Luffa (Loofa) Gourd
Melinda writes~
I have a luffa sponge growing outside. I was told (is this right?) that there are
two kinds, one is soft and the other is a hard sponge.
A. Luffa [loofa] gourd, also called sponge gourd, can be harvested at two times:
When they are young and green for a soft sponge, or wait until they are yellow or
brown for a hard, slightly scratchy sponge. Soak the gourd in water for a few days,
then peel off the skin. You may save seeds for next year by removing the seeds after
cutting off one end and then just shake them out. Allow to dry on newspaper in a
cool, dark, dry spot for two weeks and then save in the freezer labeled or in a
jar in a closet. Check for any moisture, as they will mold and/or rot if allowed
to be damp.
