Ingredients

  • 1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple, with juice
  • 1 can apple pie filling (or cherry)
  • 1 (18.25 ounce) box devil's food cake mix*
  • 1 cup pecans
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup butter, sliced

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 9 x 13-inch pan.
  2. Pour pineapple with juice into prepared pan, spreading evenly to make the first layer.
  3. Spread apple filling over the pineapple layer, then spread the dry cake mix over the apple filling.
  4. Sprinkle the cake mix layer with pecans and chocolate chips then distribute the sliced butter evenly over the top.
  5. Bake for 40 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  6. Allow to cool.

Notes

* 18.25 ounce boxes of cake mix have been replaced by 16.5 ounce and 15.25 ounce boxes. To compensate for the volume loss in a 16 ounce box, whisk 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour into the dry cake mix before proceeding with the recipe. To compensate for the volume loss in a 15.25 ounce box, add 1/2 cup + 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour and 1/4 teaspoon baking powder.
