Firehouse Stew

Ingredients

  • 1 head cabbage, chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef*
  • 1/2 pound Italian or breakfast sausage*
  • 2 (15 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato puree
  • 3/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • Dash of sugar
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 package sliced smoked sausage or kielbasa
  • Hot sauce to taste (optional)

Instructions

  1. Crumble ground beef and Italian sausage together in a large skillet; add onion and garlic and brown meat. Drain.
  2. Pour meat mixture into regular size slow cooker or medium size stew pot.
  3. Add all remaining ingredients.
  4. Add a little water if needed.
  5. Cook all day in a slow cooker on LOW or for one hour on the stove top.
  6. Serve with cornbread.

Notes

* Or you can use 1 1/2 pounds Italian or breakfast sausage and omit the beef.

If using an Instant Pot, you can saute the meat, onion and garlic right in the pot.
