Hardtack (Survival Bread)
This is a centuries old recipe. Hardtack lasts almost forever. The instructions are the same for both traditional and modern Hardtack.
Ingredients
Traditional
- 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons salt
- 1 1/2 cups water
Modern
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups sweet sorghum flour
- 9 rounded tablespoons nutritional yeast
- 1/2 cup refined coconut oil
- 3 tablespoons salt
- 1 1/2 cups water
Instructions
- Heat oven to 375 degrees F.
- Add dry ingredients to a bowl.
- Add 1/2 cup water at a time, to make a kneadable dough.
- Knead the dough, then roll out to approximately 1 inch thick.
- Cut into 1 1/2 to 2 inch squares.
- Dock or poke holes in the dough.
- Bake for 30 to 40 minutes.
- Allow to cool completely before storing.
