Hardtack (Survival Bread)

This is a centuries old recipe. Hardtack lasts almost forever. The instructions are the same for both traditional and modern Hardtack.

Ingredients

Traditional

  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons salt
  • 1 1/2 cups water

Modern

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sweet sorghum flour
  • 9 rounded tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 1/2 cup refined coconut oil
  • 3 tablespoons salt
  • 1 1/2 cups water

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Add dry ingredients to a bowl.
  3. Add 1/2 cup water at a time, to make a kneadable dough.
  4. Knead the dough, then roll out to approximately 1 inch thick.
  5. Cut into 1 1/2 to 2 inch squares.
  6. Dock or poke holes in the dough.
  7. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes.
  8. Allow to cool completely before storing.
