Caramel Brownies

Ingredients

  • 1 (14 ounce) package caramels (about 40 to 45)
  • 2/3 cup (5 ounce can) evaporated milk
  • 1 (18.25 ounce) box German chocolate cake mix*
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Melt together caramels and 1/3 cup evaporated milk.
  3. Mix cake mix, butter and 1/3 cup evaporated milk until it holds together.
  4. Pat half of cake mixture into a 9 x 13 inch pan and bake for 6 minutes.
  5. Spread chocolate chips and nuts over this and pour caramel mixture over all.
  6. Pat on remaining cake mixture.
  7. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes.

Notes

* 18.25 ounce boxes of cake mix have been replaced by 16.5 ounce and 15.25 ounce boxes. To compensate for the volume loss in a 16 ounce box, whisk 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour into the dry cake mix before proceeding with the recipe. To compensate for the volume loss in a 15.25 ounce box, add 1/2 cup + 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour and 1/4 teaspoon baking powder.
